The Muses

The Muses are a group of goddesses from Greek Mythology. In group, they embody the personification of art and inspirations of songs, poetry, history, dance and many other forms of us. Collectively, there are always nine of them, each governs unique areas.

  1. Kaliope – means ‘beautiful-voiced’ is famously known as Homer’s inspiration for the epic tales Illiad and Odyssey. She is the chief of all the muses. She is also in charge of epic poetry and heroic poetry, which is the centre of the two tales mentioned.
  2. Kleio – means ‘recount’ or ‘make famous’ and is the muse of history. People mentioned throughout history gets to be famous, so I take it that is how the name originated in a way.
  3. Erato – means ‘lovely’. She is the muse of love poetry and erotic poetry. Also, she is associated with marriage and sex. She is also closely related to Eros, the god of love.
  4. Euterpe – means ‘rejoicing well’ or ‘delight’ and is the muse of music. Certain quotes place her as being in charge of poetry as well, but there is little evidence to support it.
  5. Melpomene – means ‘to sing’. Originally described as the muse of singing, she is now known as the muse of tragedy instead. Seeing as the Greek mythology is riddled with tragedies, this is no surprise at all.
  6. Polyhymnia – means ‘the one of many hymns’ is the muse of sacred poetry and hymn. She is also credited as being related to agriculture and pantomime, as well as mime and meditation. In short, she is the spiritual muse.
  7. Terpsichore – means’ dancing delight’. She is described as the muse of dance and chorus.
  8. Thalia – means ‘flourish’ and is in charge of comedy. She is also associated with time as well.
  9. Urania – means ‘heavenly’, she is the muse of both astronomy and astrology, which, in times of Greek, the two were one and indistinguishable from one another.

I categorise the Muses in Music category. If you recall one of my earlier posts, this one and this one, I do not categorise Music as being part of Art. In my view, Music binds the Art along with Social and Occult. In each of those three, there is Music.

And the Muses personifies that so clearly, with each of the nine Muses related to each Art category – from dancing to singing, from time to astrology, and others.

It is the bind that place the Muses in Music category. The point in all this is that Music is not just an expression of Art. It is the bind, the thread, the link, the balance.

The Muses portrays all of that.
